Marriage at Newtown, Tho marriage of Mr. Fred Walter Stanthorpe Male, only son of tho late Mr. Alfred Made, oi' Stanthorpc, Queensland, bank manager, and Miss Grace M'Donnld, grand-daughter of Mr. W. Beath, of Dimedin, was celebrated at St. James's Church, Newtown, on Saturday morning. Tho Bev, M.r. Shirer officiated. The bride was given away by Mr. Georgo Jones (her uncle). Tho bridesmaid was Miss Myrtle Jones, cousin of tho bride. Mr. A- E. WiUou was best man. Later iu thn day the brido and bridegroom left for Pipiriki by the Main Trunk express. A Sale of Work. A successful rale nf work,, held for the purpose of increasing the funds of tho Anglican Maori Mission, was opened in tho lodge of tho Girls' Friendly Society on 'Saturday afternoon by Mrs. Sprott. It had been organised by the combined members of tho Gleaners' Union and the Girls', Friendly Society, and for months past they had been busy preparing, for this event, all sorts of dainty handiwork having been completed, and also many articles for uso aiid ornament displaying muck that was attractive to the prospective buyer. Very good business was done during both the afternoon and evening. The art stall was in the charge of Miss E.. Greenwood, Miss Humphries, Mrs. Busby, arid Miss A. Greenwood; work stall, tho Mioses L. Walker, Blackwood, Brownlie, and Lewis; produce stall, Mrs. Blackie, Miss Martin and. Miss Price; sweet stall, the Misses Schultz, Robinson, and Roebeck; refreshment stall, tha Mioses Wright, Walker, Foster, and Mueller; bran tub, ■ Misses Mestayer, A. Chittey, Shirtcliffo, and Uswin. Madame Mueller, who for some weeks past Ins been teaching singing classes in the Girls' Friendly Society, organised an entertainment, for the evening, and was assisted by some friends.

A Commercial Scholarship. i A scholarship to tho value of ,£3O, to be known as tho Commercial Travellers' 'and Warehousemen's Scholarship, will ba offered for conipstition in December (says an Auckland exchange). Eligible candidates must bo ths sons or daughter.*! of bona-fide members of the association. Other conditions are:—(a) That for the 12 months prior to Dec-ember 1, 1911, such candidates shall have been pupils at one or othar of the primary schools in Auckland city and district, or at a private school; and (b) that as pupils at such schCols such candidates shall bo eligible to compete! for and shall have entered tho list of candidates for the Auckland Board of Education junior district scholarships. The scholarship shall bs tenable for three years, and tho holder will receive .£lO, to be paid over by the headmaster or mistress of the Grammar Schools at the rate of £3 6s. Sd. at tho cud of each usual schcel term, and such payments will be m.ido subject to a copy of the term report as furnished by tho headmaster or headmistress being satisfactory. A Farewell Social. On Friday evening a complimentary and farewell "social" was held at the Maranui Church Hall for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Martin and Mr. W. Martin,' jun., who are leaving for the Waikato. On behalf of tho'residents of the district, Mr. W. H. Morrah mado them a presentation, as a mark of the esteem, in which they wero held. This was accompanied by a speech expressing appreciation of their qualities, especially of Airs. Martin's many kindly actions. Supper was afterwards served and dancing concluded the evening. Musical items wero given by Mrs. Mowtell, Miss Melville, Sir. Mowtell, and Mr. Moran. Mrs. Martin, by special request, danced the Highland Wing, and was greatly applauded. Miss Smith presided at tho piano. Feilding Notes. The weather was perfect on Saturday when the ladies and men played their monthly medal matches at the Aorangi golf links. Mrs. Tingey won tlte ladies' prize, and Mr. Miles tho men's. Among others playing wero Mesdames Grut and Harding, Misses Shannon, Bruce, Moore, Haybittle, Wyatt, Kirton, O'Hallorau, Prior, and Burrell, Messrs. Power, Logic, Goodbshere, Davey, Hoed, Hawk, Parfces, Ongloy, Trevena, Prior, Maclean, ana Lewis. Mrs. Giesen is spending a few days' holiday in Auckland*. Mrs. Stewart (Wanganui) has been visiting her son. Miss Florence (Blenheim) has heon spending a few weeks with Mrs. Peat. Miss "ll'Kcnssic (Dunedin). has been visiting friends in Feilding. Miss M. Spain has returned from Mrs. Pickering's, Mahoc. Mrs. and Miss Crosse (Apiti) are- at present in town. Mrs. Miles is visiting friends in Wanganui. Mrs. Alymer is visiting Wanganui. Large numbers took advantage of the special train to Palmerston to go to see the "Arcadians" and "Jack and tho Beanstalk." Among thoso who went woro Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie, Mr. and MrsRoberts, Dr. and Mrs. Willis, Dr. and and Mrs. M'Allum, Mr. and Mrs. Alym-cr, and Mr. and Mrs. Remington Jones. A wedding took place at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport, Auckland, on Thursday afternoon, when Miss Jessie Alison, daughter of Mr. Alex, Alison, Devonport, was married to Mr. I'. L. Armitage. Dr. F/. H. B. Milsoin was best man and Miss Muriel Alison bridesmaid. The Rev. Mark Sutton performed the maniago ceremony. Lady Gibbes returned to Wellington last Friday from a visit to her daughter (Mrs. Barclay) in Invercargill.

Mrs. Carver (Waipukurau) is visiting her brother (the Rev. Mr. Nicholas) in Dannevirke. The marriage of Mr. Archibald Jack, formerly of Greymouth, brother of Mrs. J. R. M'Naughton, of Hokitika, lo a daughter of the lat'o Mr. Frederick Millar, E.C., London, took place in Buenos Ayres recently. The Dresden Company very generously lent a piano free of charge to the Sunshino Guild for uso at their entertainment on Friday evening. The third annual dance of the Wellington College Old Girls' Hockey Club is being held in St. Peter's Hall, Ghuzneo Street, oil Friday, August 21. Mr. R. Scott, M.P., of Dunedin, and Mrs. Scott arrived in (own last week for the session, and are staying at "Memden," IG9 Tho Terrace. Tho death ol" Mrs. Matheson, of Ngapara, North Otago, has taken place at tho age of eighty-five- years. Mrs. Matlipson was the relict of the lave Captain Matheson, harbourmaster at Kakamii for many years, and was one of the oldest residents of the district. Mrs. Wall (Lower Valley) is , visiting Wellington. Lower Valley Dance at Foatherston. A very enjoyable dance, arranged by the married Indies of Hie Lower Valley, assisted by the bachelors, was held in the lown Hull, Feathorston on Friday night-. Iho hall was artistically decorated with palms and other greenery, and draped with (lags.
