TRAMWAY CONCESSIONS.
AN ECHO OF A SKIRMISH. That the Wellington. City Council hal uot forgotten its Acting-Mayor's encounter with the Minister for Public Works in connection with the now tramway regulations, was manifested at the council meeting last evening, when tbo Tramways Committee tabled a recommendation "that the Defence Department bo informed, in reply to their request for concessions on the tramways to Territorials travelling to and from drill, thht the council cannot consider any question of concessions until they know their position under Iho new tramway regulations." Councillor Fuller suggested, in on aiiieudment, that the recommendation, might stop at the word "concessions." ITo did not approve of hitting at tho Government in this way—it was one-sided." The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.1 , .) hoped the clause would stand as recommended. It was very necessary that the council should lot the public know that its authority in such matters was now more or less speculative. "We don't know what is going to be imposed upon us," he said. Councillor Fitzgerald agreed with the Mayor. "There's a !ot of merit in that littlo clause," ho said. Councillor Barber didn't see what the Gnvi riimcufc had to do with the clauso. "It's very paltry," he complained. "I hopo the clauso will pass," said the Mayor again. The amendment was lost on the voices and the clause was passed.
