WARDER AND PRISONERS. A FALSE COMPLAINT. Christchurch, August 9. A special sitting of tho Magistrates (Jourt was held .nt Lyttclton • Gaol this morning by Mr. 11. W. Bishop, S.M. Robert M'Carthy and Frederick Bennett were charged with having, on Juno 20 at Lyttclton, while prisoners,-preferred a false complaint against Henry Edward Anthony, au officer of-the prison. The complaint was that ho did traffic with prisoners., The visiting justices found that the prisoners committed the offence and ordered the charge, to' bo heard before a magistrate. - Both prisoners stated that they had made a niat.ahd two whips for Anthony, and that ho had given them 6omo tobacco in return.' Mr. A. W. Ironsides, gaoler, stared that the charge- had been inquired into by the visiting jus-: ticea and was found to "be absolutely -untrue. Anthony, gave an absolute denial. Frederick Halt and. John Trembath, prisoners, and Charles Spitted, warder, stated that they believed the charges to be false. 'Tho magistrate found the accused guilty and ordered them to be kept in close confinement for twenty-one days in light .cells without' irons. \
