Animated by the success of Mr. HaveJock Wilson, secretary of tho Seamen's Federation, in the seamen's and firemen's dispute, Mr. Gosling, secretary of the Transport Workers, has seized tho opportunity to become dictator of the transport world.
Tho coal-porters want a revision of (heir tariff, tho lightermen want abolition of tho distinction between daily and ■weekly men's pay, while tho stevedores have not yet formulated demands.
Jlr. G. H. Aslcwith, Secretary of tho Labour Department of tho Board of Trade, is interviewing the various sections, with a view to discovering a basis of settlement. Great supplies of frozen meat are held up, and prices at Smithfield are rising. Hundreds of reels of paper for newspaper printing cannot ho handled. Five thousand carters have struck. ' SEAMEN'S STRIKE. . •' New York, August 8. It is foared that fifty British tramp steamers will be thrown idle, as the Sailors' and Firemen's Union of Britain has ordered the men not to sign for the return voyage unless they aro granted an increase of pay' similar to that conceded in Britain. AMERICAN RAILWAY DISPUTE. Chicago, August 8. Strained relations exist between the employees and the Western railway companies. A„big strike may ensue.
