INCREASED DRINKING.
OVER 10,000 ARRESTED. Tb.B number of persons prosecuted for drunkenness i iring the past financial year was 11,718, an increase of I.OGI on the number charged with tho offence during the previous year. .Of that number 37.31 of tho males and G5.98 per eenh.of females had previous convictions recorded against them, and 5.41 .;cr cent, of'males were not permanent residents of the Dominion. The total number of first offenders was 705 G.
The total number of persons arrested for 'drunkenness in. the four centres and their suburbs wero 5188-males and 006 females, an increase on the previous year of 917 ranles and 111 females, and of those numbers all but four persons were convicted, Tho greatest numerical incrqaso was recorded in Auckland, where the, number of arrests was 829 in excess of those in the previous year. In Wellington the increase was 220, and in Christchurch only 17, while in Dnnedin there was a decrease of 38. The larje increase 1 calls for notice, remarks tho Commissioner, but no definite conclusions can bo drawn from the figures. The following table, compiled from the latest figures available, shows tho convictions for dmnkonness per 10,000 of population for HlO years 1907, 1908, and 1909 in Australia and New Zealand:—
