4 •DAILY SUMMARY. QUESTIONS AND REPLIES. Tho Legislative Council yesterday rejected the private Bill which was meant to enable a resident of Ashburton to petition the Supreme' Court for a divorce under rather unusual circumstances. Tho Address-in-Roply debate wns concluded, and tho Council' adjourned until to-mor-row, week. • ■ /
Ih the House, members had before them 131 Ministerial replies to questions which have accumulated on tho Order Paper since th.6 opening dfiy of the session. It is usual to devote Wednesday afternoon to the discussion of the replies, but on account of the largo number before the House yesterday, two hours moro wero allowed, and tho discussion ran on until after 9 o'clock. Administrative -matters in great variety wore touched upon, the Railways Department coming in for a particularly large share of suggestive and critical questions. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie had just risen as though to reply to some of tho criticisms of his Ministerial actions, when the Speaker announced that time was up, and called on tho orders of tha day. As tramway regulations had been referred to earlier with some acerbity, and Mr. Luko had but a minute Fofore remarked that the Minister was keeping quiet, and was "under a cloud," tho suppression of Mr. M'Kcnzio by the time limit was regarded by members as rather a good joke.
After putting tho Wauganui School Sites Amendment Bill through Committee without amendment, the House resumed the debate on the second reading of tho Town Planning Bill, Sympathy with tho town-planning idea, and objections to the curtailment of local powers were again tho principal notes of the speeches. The debate was again adjourned. ...
