ST. JOHN'S DEBATING SOCIETY.

St. John's Literary and Debating Society met on Tuesday night in (he Willis Slice! classroom, the subject debated being "That a System of Preference Should bo Established Throughout the British Empire." This was affirmed by Mr. D. Patterson, M'conded by Mr. "A. R. Coad, and op|x>scd by Messrs R. Longford and Slevenson. There were ten speeches, and the debate proved highly interesting. On the motion being put to (he meeting Iho negative was upheld. Dr. fiibb, in his summing np. placed P. Longford first with 31 marks, 1). Patterson second c 6 marks, and D. Douglas third with So marks.
