THE LORDS AND THE VETO BILL.

MEETINGS OF THE STALWARTS

STRONG WORDS. "SHOOT AND BE DAMNED." liy Telecraph—Prqss Association— Oopyricbt (Rec. August' G, 5.5 p.m.) London, August 5. In response to Lord Morley's circular seventy-six Liberal Peers have pledged themselves to vote for tho Government. Sixty-nine Peers' will follow Lord Halsbury, and eight Unionists are-willing, if neccssary, to vote with the Government in order to prevent the necessity of creating new Peers. Meetings of Stalwarts held at Holborn and Chelsea have passed resolutions supporting Lord ilalsbury. Tho latter, speaking at Chelsea, said, he did not believe tho people of England demanded to overthrow the ancient Constitution. To do Mr. Redmond justice he made no secret of his object, but boldly told tho Government that unless they did what he wanted he would turn them out. Lord Selbourne denounced Mr. Asquith for advising the King to creato Peers and set 'up a despotism in order to pay Mr. Redmond's price. History could not, he said, show a more infamous conspiracy. Let tho Radicals create their Peers and thus bring home to tho country the revolutionary nature of the procedure. Mr. Wyndkatn declared that when Mr. Asquith talked' of creating five hundred Peers the Unionist' party's answer should Ixi like Lord Olive's to a cheating bully, "shoot and be damned."
