The Victoria, with an Australian mail only, arrived at Auckland from Sydney tit "i.30 p.m. yesterday. The Wellington portion of the mail will arrive here by this afternoon's Main Trunk express. The same train will bring the Wellington and southern portions of the English and American moils picked up at Suva by the Kurow. which arrived at Auckland from the Islands on Saturday. An English mail via Suez, and an Australian mail reached Wellington on Saturday. A good den! of fun was caused by Magician Nicola's magic ball at the Opera House oil Saturday evening. The ball works on a vertical rod on the tinieball principle, and descends once for "Yes" and twico fcr "No." After anxious inquirers in- the gallery had been informed that neither the Oriental, St. .Tames, nor Athletic would win the senior Rugby championship, an inquirer of a sportive turn of mind was made ao quainted with the news that Antarctic would not win tlje Grand National Steeplechase. Then a wag well at the back asked: "Will Sir Joseph Ward be Prime Minister next year?" The aitswer came, "No," and was greeted with much laughter and applause. As a sequel to the alleged larrikinism outside the Hult Drillshed last Thursday night, one person is, to be charged with having obstructed the medical examiners of the Defence Department, and another with having broken a window in the building. Proceedings are also to be taken against the young men who failed to present; themselves l'or medical examination iit the Hutt that same evening. The Defence Department has arranged for further medical examinations at .Tolmsonville (on 'Wednesday), I'orirua (Thursday), and Paokariki (Friday). The AVellington Central Mission lield an evening service at tlio New Theatre yesterday. The Rev. E. 0. Blamires preached from-the text, "If we confess our sins faithful and just to forgive." The Silrer Band rendered a selection, and Mrs. J. Lewis contributed a vocal solo. The brotherhood did not meet on account of the memorial service to the late Mr. T. E. Taylor. A re-union of all who have been associated with the mission from its inception will take place on Friday, August 18. just ten years after the mission's formation. Efforts are,being made by tho herbalists in the Dominion to secure statutory recognition of their business. A deputation will wait upon the Minister for Internal Affairs on Wednesday to advocate their claims. At the Shearers' Conference held last week it was resolved: "That the conference protests against Clause 2 of tho boy scout law, stating that all scouts must be loyal to their employers at all times." The Tramway Band played in the Hospital grounds yesterday afternoon, and as a result of the collection taken up the Hospital authorities were handed the sum of .£(!. "The Arcadians" Company passed through Wellington from the south yesterday. Dr. Mackin, J.P., was on'the bench at the Mount Cook Police Court on Saturday. Andrew Thomas Plnnkct, charged with insobriety, was tilled 405., or 21 days' imprisonment. One iirtl' offender, on bail, failed to appear, and was fined 10s., or 21 hours' imprisonment. Eliza Southca (drunkenness) was convicted and discharged. Walter Corrick (similar charge) was fined 10s„ or IS hours' imprisonment. Edward O'Rielly (drunkenness) was fined 55., of 2-1 hours' imprisonment. Joseph M'Cartncy (drunkenness) was convicted and <Jischarged.
