Masterton, August 4. .Efforts of the polico to trace the missing man James Kingdon have so fur proved unsuccessful, though the police have searched many places. It is proposed to carry out a systematic search of the whole town and district by a largo body of residents on Sunday. THE NEW SOLDIERY. , Wairoa, August i. ■ Just over/one hundred have been medically examined for the Territorials, and there aro only o few more to come in. Staff Sergeant-Major Bishop is very pleased with tho conduct of those examined. DAYLIGHT SAVING. Christchurch, August 4. Commenting on the Auckland complaint that defence training is going to clash with organised recreation of the nation's youth, the "Star" suggests that the remedy lies on the daylight saving scheme. It urges that this Bill ought to be taken up by the Government and put through this session, on the ground that it would obviato the danger of the defence system interfering with either the business of the country or tho legitimate recreation o" young men. C\ UNION COMPANY CONGRATULATED. Auckland, August 4. The inauguration of the Vancouver service was celebrated by luncheon on the Maranin. Mr. Parr, Mayor, remarked that this was a red letter day, the inclusion of Auckland in tho All Red route being a matter for general satisfaction to the Empire and New Zealand, and to this portion in particular. He congratulated the Union Company on its enterprise and pluck. Captain Morrisby said without boasting New Zealanders could say New Zealand would have one of the best services on the Pacific. MAORIS AND HEALTH OFFICER. New Plymouth, August 4. An exciting incident, which occurred in one of the principal streets to-day, arose out of what is said to be the first instance of tho police being called on to carry out an order of tho Health Officer under the Public Health Act to remove to some suitable place persons suffering' from infectious disease, and who are not provided with proper lodging or habitation. Thcro have been many cases of typhoid amongst tho Maoris at the kainga at Puniho, and to-day two Maoris from there refused to enter the Hospital. The ActingHealth Officer called in the police,'and they were taken to tho Public Hospital. SNOW. Timaru, August 4. A Canadian snow-plough, imported .by the Mackenzie County Council, is reported to have done good work clearing the roads after the lato snowfall. Snow still lies a foot thick at Pairlie, but tho sunny facings are clearing. DAY LABOUR ONLY. Dunedin, August 4. The .Hon. T. Mackenzie told /a "Star" reporter to-day that there was a tendency among contractors to stiffen prices, and as a result the Government decided to build the bridge over the Taieri River, at Taieri Mouth, by day labour, and likewiss to execute extensive alterations at the Hermitage by day labour.
