THE RACING CLUBS AND THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS.

Sir,—At the rccont coufereuco of the racing clubs, the majority of (lie racing clubs wore in favour of stipendiary stewards, but that seems to be tho end of tho matter. The South Island clubs wore the ones that objected to it. and they would hardly like to bo told why they object to the stipendiary steward. Leagues nro being now formed in different parls of the Dominion, and the public aro asked to support clean sport. Tho clubs must not forget that the sport is kept going by the general public, and they are generally the sufferers at tho meetings. niul tho gentlemen who are known as "in tho know" arc tho ones who scoup the pool. The punter nowadays docs not make his investments until ho seems the names of the riders posted up on tho board, and lie is then pretty certain' that if he ives a good boy up on a good hoi so ho will mostly get a good run for his money. I for one should bo very sorry to sec the sport wiped out, and if the clubs will give tho stipendiary stewards question their further consideration, and tho public, a fair deal, I am sure the sports will loyally support tJicm.—l am, etc., SPOUT.
