OROUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho regular meeting of the Oroua County Council was held yesterday. Pre-sent-Councillors W. G. Pearce (chairman), Hugh Burrell, H. Redmayne, J. Morrison, and .T. H. Vincent. The Auditor-General wrote regarding payment o£ oartaiu interest out of generai account, stating that as sonic of the items involved are in escess of the amount fixed by statute. He regretted that he was unable to accedo to tho wishes of tho council. The New Zealand State Guaranteed Advances Office wrote stating that theBoard had provisionally approved of the application of tho council for a loan of ,£IBOO for tho purpose of constructing Fitzlierbert Koad Hast and Gardiner's Koad. Tlio county treasurer presented the followir.g report:—General rates outstanding for 1910-11, JSI23 IDs. 10rl.; rates levied for 1911-12, ,£IS9S; collected, ,£IIGG lis. Bank balances: General account, dr.. .£3103 lis. 9d.; interest account, cr., ,£3SI os. 4d. The chairman stated tli.it lie had forwarded for the Counties' Conference a remit to tho elFcct that rates should become liable to 10 per cent, addition if rat paid within threo months, instead of within fix months as at nresont obtained, ile explained that, at the present time, the council were paying interest on a larger overdraft on the general account than was necessary. The ratepayers were called on to pay the rates only once a year, and they should bp asked to pay them promptly. With the income fax tliev wore given only H days in which to pay. The couwil endorsed tlio remit.
