WARD V. MASSEY.

Sir,—Will Mr. Edward T. Evans tell us where are the meu who give their labour for food and shelter only; also, which State Departments aro worse than useless.; also, those Departments whose staffs should bo. reduced? . Vagne generalities, such as your correspondent givesviis, aro usek's«.V...W<! want, particulars. It is. not the fault of the Government.- that there are upwards of" 7(10" taxes "on" commodities; it is the fault of the people who have not demanded their abolition. Evidently they-love to be taxed in this way, for there ia no outcry from them against such taxation. The Government keeps pace with the people, so that the latter get exactly what they want; there-, fore, why growl? On the other hand, it is questionable, whether the Opposition, if returned to power, would give the masses what they want. They would probably give them something they don't want—soup kitchens, for instance. Conclusion: Stick to the Government.

Mr. Evans ought to" know that tho gentleman he is anxious to see retired from office doubled the land tax. thus proving that ho believes in the principle of securing'for tho people, .what rightly belongs to them,'viz., the. increment in land values. If that is not a Radical policy I don't know what is. .But the masses have not applauded his statesmanlike action in taking for them more of the wealth they create, nor have they requested him to still further add to the land tax. If they are satisfied, why does Mr. Evans growl? Is he a man with a grievance?—l am, etc., F. July 31.
