TYPHOID AT PORIRUA.

STATEMENT IN PARLIAMENT.

An epidemic of typhoid fever broke out in the Porirua Mental Hospital at 'tho beginning' of March. Sorao alarming rumours regarding tho matter have been ventilated, by members of Parliament who have asked for information on the subject aiid iii' 'statement.'was'lhadi: by the Minister for' Health yesterday afternoon. Tho Hon. G. IWlds said (hat there had been thirty cases iu tho institution, that number including three attendants. There were no cases at present, all the patients being convalescent, with the exception of one attendant, who was admitted to the Wellington Hospital on July 13. The last case among the patients occurred at the beginning of June. There were four deaths in March, two in April, two in May, and two in June; thcro was never more than one death on any one day. Every possible precaution had bcou taken to prevent a further epidemic. In roply to Sir. W. Buchanan, the Minister said that, while thcro may have been previous cases of typhoid in tho inslituliou, there had been nothing in tho nature of an epidemic.
