MINES COMMISSION SET UP.

TO SIT THIS WEEK. Tho first sitting of the Minos Couimispion will be hold in Hip, Supreme Court Buildings, AVellington, at 11 a.m. next Thursday. The members of the Commission arc Messrs. J. S. Evans. S.M. and AYarden. Nelson (chairman), N. D. Cochrane, of Duncdin, mining engineer; J. Dowgray. of Granity, miner! Q. Fletcher, of Granity, mine managerj H. S. Molineaux, of Bnrcwood, mine manager; A\ r . E. Pnrry, of AYaihi, miner; and V. Heed, of Wellington, Inspecting Engineer of Mines. Tho commission is directed to inquire and report «s to: — (1) Tho prevention of accidents in mines: (2) The ventilation of mines; (3) Tho underground sanitation of mines; (i) Change and hath houses for miners; and morn particularly as to (a) What steps could ho taken for the hotter prevention of accidents, particularly those from tho use and firimj of explosives, falls from roof and side, also accidents in shafts and from machinery; and whether any improvement can he made in. tho present system of investigation and inquiry into accidents, (li) Whether any, and if so what, steps should be taken to lay down nn improved standard of ventilation in mines, (c) AVhat stops should bo taken to guard against the disease known as miners' phthisis, (d) AVlie.ther any, nnd if so what, fresh legislation is necessary to pive effect to the recommendations of the Commission. The Commission has tho usual powers of taking evidence, and may fix the times and places of its sittings. It is required to present its report within threa months, dating..from last Saturday, .July Mr. V.
