MASTERTON NOTES.

IFiam Our Special Correspondents.) Masierton, July 28. The news of tho .death of Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P., was received in Masterton with profound regret. The deceased gentleman was well known in this district. Ho took an active part in the NoLicenso campaign three years ago, and his spirited addresses had no littlo influence in determining the result at tho ballot.

At the meeting of tho Mastcrton Racing Club yesterday,.Mr. D. M'Lachlali, ono of the vice-presidents, referred to the growing disposition of a certain section of the community to restrict tho pleasures and amusements of others. Ho thought that the timo had arrived when every true sport should bestir himself to pi-event his liberties being still further encroached upon. Mr. C. A. Pownall suggested that the time was ripe for the formation of a branch of tho National League in. tho district.

As alluded to yesterday, tho following extract from the diary of ,Mr. Buller, grandfather of Mr. William Barton, of Featherston, lias been photographed and published:—"On tho morniug of Wednesday, the 3rd of May, 1820, an agricultural plough was for tho first timo put into the laud of New Zealand at Kiddi KidiTi, and I felt much pleasure in holding it, after a team of six bullocks brought down by tho Dromedary. I trust that this auspicious day will bo remembered with gratitude, and its anniversary kept by ages yet unborn."

The second annual danco in connection with the Mastorton Post and Telegraph Hockey Club was held in the Exchango Hall last night. About fifty couples occupied the floor, and excellent music was supplied by Mr. Frank M'Kenzie's orchestra. The function was in every way a success.

A debate on the laad question is to take place on Monday evening next between teams representing Masterton and Eketahixna. ' Tho former trill champion fto leasehold, and tho latter tho freehold system of land tenure.
