HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Corrcsnondent.) ~T llo annual "social" in connection with the l'etone Bowling Club was held in St. Augustine's Hall, l'etone, last night. Ihero was an excellent attendance, including a number of members from Wellington and Hutt Clubs. Tho first part of the_ evening was devoted to progressive euchre, and, after supper, dancing was indulged in till a late hour. The evening was one of tho most successful which tho club has ever held. The Petono and the Lower Hutt Boroughs have not yet received the completed valuation rolls from the Valuation department, as amended since tho newfigures were arrived at. In the meantime they are prevented from striking and demanding the annual rates. The ietone Borough, however, expects to receive the figures before tho next council meeting, and the matter of striking a rate for the cm-rent year will then be taken in hand.
At the time of the rains nothing positive could bo said as to whether any damage Lad resulted to any of tho Hutt Biver protective works through the recent heavy flood. An inspection made by tho overseer, however, shows that the only damage done was in the upper reaches, and that was not extensive. A full report' will be made at next meeting of the Eh-er' Board. . The river itself has now cone down to what is practically a normal winter level.
