PACIFIC CABLE.
NEW LINK WITH AUSTRALIA By Telcerach— Prcaa Associalion-OoDrrleU London, July 27. A Bill introduced into Parliament authorises the Pacific Cable Board to construct a cable between Australia and New Zealand out of tho reserve fund provided. The reserve will thereby bo reduced below .£IOO,OOO. Tho board will repay tho amount in thirty-five years at 3\ per cent.
The new direct Pacific cable between Australia and New Zealand will make tho fourth telegraph link between the countries. The Eastern Extension Company laid its first cable from Wakapuaka to La Porouse, New South "Wales, in 187(1, and subsequently n second cable was laid between tho saiuo two jwints. In 1902 tho Pacific cable, between Doubtless Bay and Southport, Queensland, via Norfolk Island, was opened to traffic.
An important step in improving communication with America was taken last year by the Pacific Cable Board. It leased from tho Canadian Pacific Railway a copper wire between the British Columbian terminus of the cable and Montreal, thereby securing to itself direct communication, by its own operators between Australasia and Montreal. It has become possible, moreover, to send messages with only a single retransmission between Montreal and Fanning Island, and it is hoped that even this retransmission at Bamficld Creek may bo dispensed with in time.
