NATIVE SCHOOLS.

At the end of the year 1909 there were ninety-four Native village schools in operation. During the-year 1910 three new schools were opened-viz., Kakaunm, Kawhia: Tort Waikato, near Iho mouth of the Waikato Hivor; and Waimihn, King Country; and the schools at Pamoana, Yvanganui River, and le Kopua, Maniapoto country, were reopened \t December 31, 1910, there were, in addition to public schools giving instruction to Maori children, 114 schcols in operation in New Zealand for. the primary purpose of giving instruction to the Maori :-Nativo village schools, !>!); mission schools subject to inspection by the Education' Department, G; boardin','Kchools, affording secondary education to Maoris, 9. The- following are some of the figures in regard to the. attendance at Native village schcols :-Numher on rolls at end of year 1910, 4280; average weekly roll-number, 4392; average yearly attendance, 37H. These figures shew a slight improvement on the previous year. There were 3SI Maori boys and girls receiving higher education. 378 of whom were attending the various secondary Aativo schools, while the remaining three boys were pupils of other secondary schcols. Of these 54 boys and 83 girls were holders of free places' provided by the Government.
