AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP,

A meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr. S. F. Whitcombe presiding. . It was reported that the net profits of the entertainment given by the King's Theatre management, under the auspices of the centre, amounted to .£23 Bs. 6d. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the. management of the King's Theatre for its generous assistance to the centre. It was resolved to send a team to compete at the Cross-country Harrier Championship at Auckland on August 12 next, the team to consist of five men, one to act iis manager. Further details with regard to the appointment of manager was left to the secretary. It was further resolved that the sum of .£2B be allowed the team for expenses. In connection with the Auckland meeting, correspondence was received from the Wellington Harriers' Club and the Brooklyn Harriers disclosing some disagreement with regard to the date of the five-mile test for selection for representative honours. The original date was July 29, and the Wellington Harriers desired an alteration, to August 5, as the original date clashed with their annual 21-mile steeplechase meeting at Trentham, which, to suit the Wellington Racing Club, was invariably held the week following the win.ter meeting, the hurdles being kept standing by the courtesy of Mr. A. E. Whyte, secretary of the Racing Club. The Brooklyn. Club objected to the alteration of dates; contending that their men would have difficulty in obtaining leave. After lengthy discussion, tho centre being desirous to meet both clubs as far as possible, it was decided to fix the date of the test for August 5, and to intimate to the ""probables"—those" who. considered they had a chance of selection—to arrange for leave in the meantime. Some strong remarks were passed over the delay in the supply of the nMendod rules, concerning which the New Zealand body had held a special meeting. The centre;had already written to the New Zealand Council protesting against the ■delay, and asking for a cony of tho amended rules, and the letter had not been answered. It was decided to make a further protest to the council.
