DOCTORS HOLD 01 T T XO HOPE OF RECOVERY. IBy Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrislchurch, July 20. Yeslordav's reports concerning the condition of the Mayor of Christchurch <Jlr. T. E. Taylor, iI.P.) gave some reasons for hopo that his Worship was on the road to recovery, but to-day's official bulletins are very pessimistic. It was reported this morning that .Mr. Taylor had had a bad night,,, ami his friends were taking a very gloomy 'view of the prospects. . - ~] At midday his medical attendants issued a brief and discouraging report: "Improvement not maintained; condition grave." It is understood thnt a further operation was decided upon early this afternoon, but shortly after two o'clock it was officially announced that tho condition of tho patient was distinctly worse, and that tho doctors could hold out no hope of recovery. . The Mayor sent for the town clerk this morning, 'and requested him to mnko nn announcement on his behalf on .the following lines:— "That in view of his severe illness and tho unlikelihood in the event of Ins early recovery of his being able to devote the degree' of physical energy necessary to deal with the difficulties of the question of supplies of materials for carrying cut the proposed road surface scheme, he desired In suggest to his friends to take an absolutely impersonal view of the proposal at the poll to-morrow. If carried out, ho wished the scheme to be n credit to the city, but owing to his anxiety for its success ho would rather the proposal were not carried under present wrcuni- " ThrTiown clerk added that though Mr. Tavlor was very weak, he was quite bright and Clear-headed when he gave this message.
