In January last he left .\ew York city, and has (according to conditions) travelled without money. After touring this Dominion ho proceeds to Tasmania, and, from there-, works his passage to the Philippines. The challenge, from the Carterton Literary and Debating Society to the Feathcrston Society to a debate at a date to bo arranged has been accepted.
Settlers of Belvedere are signing a petition, asking for a trailic bridge over the Hiraki Stream, near the Belvedere School. The petition will be presented at tho next meeting of the TVairnrana South County Council.

A painful accident happened to Mr. AV. Martin when cycling to Greytown (he other afternoon. When near Dnloiield Bond the wheel skidded, and tho rider was thrown heavily to the ground. He was picked up unconscious, and taken into Daleton Private Hospital, where his injuries were attended to.
Improvement in the strain of purebred poultry in this district continues, nnd several local exhibitors were successful at tho recent Hastings Poultry Show, among the.ni being Messrs. C. R. P. Armstrong (Buff Orpingtons), 11. J. K. Meyrick (White Leghorns), and E. J. Chapman (Partridge Wyandottes.) Mr. Meyriek won a challenge cup outright. As a result of tho show n number of sites were effected, and some new poultry comes to Carterton, Mr. Chapman bringing back a trio with him. Mr. Vt. Tucker has also procured a number of wellbred Black Orpingtons from a Hastings breeder.
A Methodist Boys' Club has been formed in -Carterton, and it is proposed to meet every Friday evening. The officers are:—President, Jiev. C. H. Htandage; vice-presidents. Messrs. B. Rober.ts, S. Davios, and AY". "\V. Mansfield; secretary, Mr. C. Kiddie;-treasurer.. Mr. W. Mansfield, j'tinr. .Messrs. Davie.?, EoWrts, and A. C. Eowse were appointed a committee to draw up rules.
FEILDING.
The Kev. O. H. Jupp, organising secretary of the Presbyterian Bible Class movement of .New Zealand, visited i'eilding yesterday. The Feilding and District Sunday School Workers' Association met lust evening, who:i the Kev. A. B. Chappcll delivered an address on graded lessons.
A conference between the Wanganui Board and the Town aud Suburban School Committees find Die Wanganui Technical School Committee is to be held in the Wanganui Council Chambers to-morrow welling. Tho business is to consider (in tie*' of tho new conditions) is the place, of the technical school in our system of education—its organisation, . its efficiency, and possible enlargements of its sphere of usefulness. Already the wattle trees are in bloom in this district, and iheir lovely hues are brightening the, landscape. Usually (ho bloom comes in August. A match was played on tho Aorangi link-; between tho Kiinboltou aud tho Feilding Golf Clubs, Feildhig winning by II to 4. The member for Oroun (Mr. D. 11. Guthrie) addressed a good meeting at Colyton. on Saturday night, Mr. W. G. Poarsc presiding. The speech was on tho lines of thoso given at other centres, and was listened to with interest. At the conclusion a motion of thanks aud confidence was accorded Mr. Guthrie.
OTAKI.
Mr. Armilage. assistant-master at tho Otaki Native College, returned from Christchurch yesterday morning, after having spent a month's holiday there. In consequence nf the. rain- which fell on Sunday and -yesterday, the. rivers and creeks ore Hooded throughout the district, and low-lying lands are submerged. Sou I'll of Par'aparnumu, the road in places was under water. The Native College, after four weeks' holiday, reassembled yesterday. All tho scholars, however, have not yet returned. Tho death is announced at Greytown of Mrs. E. Kcmptnn, sister-in-law to Mrs. Arthur Mitchell, of this town. Deceased was SI years of age. Several members of the "Trade" met in camera yesterday, and discussed plans for the coming electoral campaign. Tho meeting was well attended.
HASTINGS.
The young man. David Macdonald, who had his arm severely injure] in a machinery accident, at Woolford House, navelock, had to havo it amputated after his removal to a private hospital at Hastings. He is now doing as well as can b? expected, further details of the accident do not convey much additional information. .Macdonald, it seems, was standing close to a clothes-drying machine when he slipped and fell into if. Others wore in the room but did not see him fall.
