THE TURF.
ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. ."Perplexed."—W. Price did not proparo Elcctr.ikoff for his Wellington engagements. Tho Menschikoff gelding is trained by A. Rhodes. : NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glkccoe.l Judging bv the latest charts, issued by the turf accountants, it appears to be certain that Nyland will be the Highden elect for tho Winter Cup, and the son ot Finland now ranks as equal favourite with Provocation. That the Awapum horse is going to beat Provocation at a difference of 51b. is hard •to imagine, for the Birkenhead colt is n truly great horse, and the race which he had , at Trentham will work wonders in lura. Some critics profess to believe that J. Farmer can hardly have him ready for the race, but it must bo remembered that the same opinion prevailed before the last Feilding Stakes. Yet the colt won in the hollowest fashion. This being so, Farmer may safely be left to look after the training matters. As a result of the fall which he received when racing in 'he Final Hurdles on Saturday Hydrant was very sore when being entrained for Napier yesterday. Captain Jingle, Amaru, Corazon, Paritutu, Compass, Dnil, Dogger Bank, ' Ariom, Somersault, and Flitaway .were shipped to Riccarton by'the Maori last night. A large section of owners and trainers in Perth have preseuted a flat to the West Australian Turf Club urging them to do away with the system of stipendiary stewards, and 1 threatening that, unless their wishes nre complied with, they - will refuse to race their horses where theso officials hold sway. There were four double winners at the Trentham meeting, viz.. Undecided, Hoanga,! Eleetrakoff, and Waterworks. A. Oliver, who is to ride Nylnnd in the Winter Cup, has won the race on the last three occasions. The-first horseman to tho Highden stable has again renewed ■ his contract for the ensuing season. As a result of his two wins at Trentham, Undecided will now have to carry a 101b. penalty in the Winter Cup, making his weight lOst. 21b. The Menschikoff gelding has been heavily backed by someone, but his chances cannot be favourably considered amongst the class which, he.will meet at Riccarton. Lo Beau is expected to reach Wellington by tho Tarawora from Auckland this morning. The. Auckland 'chaser is on his way to Riccarton to compete at the brand National meeting. The New Zealand jockey, H. Cairns, who has not had, the good fortune tp salute the judge, very often since his arrival in Victoria last year, was on.a winner at Caulfield lost Saturday week. At tho Victoria Park jiony meeting in Sydney last week, the' New Zealand-bred Lady Zoin did the Ring a goodturn by beating a short-priced favodrite in another, New Zcalander, Miss Soult, and 17 others in the 14.2 Handicap. Energy was first to show out, and, accompanied by Lauri into the straight, these two were ntill in front at tho distance, noro tho field closed up, and Lady Zoin, wide on the outside, came or. nnd beat Miss Soult by half a length. According to what the Sydney jockey, W. H. M'Lachlan, told the "various press interviewers on his first arrival in England, he intended remaining in England, but something must have occurred to cause him to suddenly alter his plans. At tiny rate, a cable was received from him, last week, to the effect that he was returning- to Australia immediately, and he is now on'his. way. •tl has been, suggested that ho has received a gocd English offer for next season, and, in consequence, wishes to make arrangements for the disposal of his property. -When Grafnax carried 12st.r.l2ib. to victory, in record time, for the race in (he Australian .Steeplechasa last year (says the Sydney '-Referee"), some of his admirers and champions Were cliided for .having.,.the temerity to compare.,thp son of Grafton' with such famofis try porformers that had-preceded him as Redleap,' Blue Mountain, Bellis, Daimio, and Co T . The conditions under, which Grafnax succeeded to third place in this year/s'V:R.C. "Grand .National Steeplechase, however, stamp him as one of the very -best, cross-country horses -that Australia has yet produced. ..After getting over a couple of niilcs at an even-time gait four' days before the race, the services of a veterinary surgeon had to bo prociiredi for tho Grafton gelding, whose leg had swollen to such an extent that further-track work was out of the question; and even under these conditions ho beat all but two of the twelve other starters. As last year's winner has still over three weeks to go, ho 'may by that time have been able t0..d0 sufficient work to fit him for a repetition of his success over 'tho four-mile journey at Caulfield next month, and if he does win thero should be no further disputing his right, to bi classed with the previous best. He w'fl bo meeting Confide on 2flb. better terms than when the latter beat him at Flemington, and Leah Kleshna 101b. better. RedleapV winnings for his'six races totalled £5049, while for a similar number of, successes Grafnax has only earned j.'3fi77: Should he account for the opposition in the Australian Steeplechase, however, he will' not be far behind the Mill Park champion as a stake winner. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB, By Teieera'nb—Fress Aseoclation-Copyrieht (Rec. July 24, 10.20 p.m.) Adelaide, July 24.
