Mr. A. K. Uislop, who has filled the office, of secretary to tlu \VeJ ington branch of tho Australasian InStituto ot Marine Engineers since 1882, tendeied hi» resignation at the annual general meeting of the institute yesterday afternoon. "I have had," he said in a letter to lho chairman, "the honour and uic unique experience of retaining ni through the lirm confidence of over .«) per cent of the members, and the wrench at parting with office is keenly felt b> me, but, unfortunavely, is necessary, as business concerns are calling and must have attention. During Hie years m which we have worked for the engineering profession very much solid work ins been accomplished and the status ot the marine engineer in this Dominion has been more materially uplifted. We nave met ship-owners and employers ol engineers frequently, and at all times have earned their respect and solid consideration, and tho policy of your institute has been to show that the employer and employee can work in harmony and tor tho good of all concerned. .Not once during mv occupancy of Hie position has a threat'or an angry word passed between tho employers and our institute, although at. times strenuous conferences have been held and most important issues adjusted. Mr Uislop also expressed the hope that the' same poliev of conciliation will be followed in future, and thanked the emplovers for their unvarying courlv-sy and consideration towards him.
