WOMEN OF THE PEN.

WRITERS AT DINNER.

The Women Writers' dinner camo of age more than twelve months ngo, but that it has lost none-of'the vitality of youth was clear enough from the twentysecond gathering held recently at the Criterion Bestaurant in London. The old sense of revolt may havo gone, but the comradeship remains. The women who earn their living by their pens assemble to meet one another, to renew old friendships, and to make new acquaintances. And they do it amid surroundings which have nothing of the suggestion of the blue stocking or the "frump." The lights sparkled on jewels and Paris costumes.' The- conversation was merry and spontaneous. The speaking after dinner was brief, full of point and suggestion, and delivered in a manner which might shame the more formal performances associated with the banquets of the other 60S. As for the company, it is only at this annual gathering that one can realise how much excellent work is being done 'n literature and journalism by women. Here nearly two hundred, all of them wielders of tho pen; many of them bearing names which they have made known by their own talent wherever English books aro j read. Miss May Sinclair was in the chair, i Lady Bell mado the speech, which a too ■ great modesty prevented the president I from attempting herself; and among the listeners were Lady M'Laren, Mrs. flora Annie Steel, Mrs. Kntherine Cecil Thurs- ■: ton, Mrs. W. K. Clifford, Miss Evelyn ' Sharp, Miss Violet Hunt, Mrs. Burnett Smith, Mrs. Belloc Lowndes, Mrs. Charles '. Ferrin, and Madame Albanesi. Truly ono i might say that, had some calamity overtaken the dinner, one-half the writers of English literature of the present daywould have ceased to produce.
