COMMERCIAL ITEMS.

INVESTMENT SHARES. There were no transactions in investment shares on Saturday. The buying and telling Quotations were as under:—

THE MONEY MARKET. There appears to be an abundance of money in London at tho moment, and rates are comparatively low. tjic 01 tne Uatfk of £nejand show exceptional strength* the proportiou ef reserves to liabilitie:. being as hiirh as 53.38 per cent. The Bank rate is not disturbed, ana remains ai i per cent., but short loans arc down to H per esnl., and three months' bills to 2 uer cent. Tho position of the money market in the near future will depend upon the demands made by the United States. America is in a position to draw co!d from London, and, should this power be put into operation, rates must advance. The European and American harvests are just about to commence, and enormous sums must be found to furnish the waecs aud transport charges. America may be forced to obtain the assistance of London, but an adverse movement of this character will not be felt until well on towards the end of next month.

PRODUCE MARKETS. The prices of New Zealand nroducts arc being fairly well 'maintained. Wool appears to havo recovered the initial decline registered at the beginning of the London sales, while the Bradford top market is reported cheerful, with prices unchanged. The drought ia Europe is causing butter to keep firm, although there is nothing unusual in the prices. Danish is nuoted at 120 a., which is about the normal price. New . Zealand cheese keens steady, at 60s. to 61s. The outlook for wheat is not very promising, because of the fact that the European crops give indications of being larger than in the past season. If this should prove to be correct, then less will be ienuircd to be imported, and prices must recede, with lcsEcncd demand, hut wheat is, comparatively speaking, not of any very great importance to New Zealand, where the production is only occasionally more than sufficient to meet local requirements. CUSTOMS. Customs revenue collected at the Dort of Wellington on Saturday totalled £1111 15s. 2d., the amount for the week being £13,425 , 19s. lid.
