DISTRESSING OCCUBEENCE. DEATH OF AN OLD LADY. A distressing accident, resulting in the death of an old lady, named Mrs. Catherine Lundy, aged SO years, occurred at Newtown on Tuesday. The deceased lady resided with her (laughter, Miss Janet Lundy, in No. 25 Drummond Street, in rooriis rented from Mrs. Scott, and was ■usually, .left alone during the daughter's absence at her employment. She was last seen olives 011 Tuesday morning, about 10 o'clock, when she informed Mrs. Scott that she was going out. Later in the day Mrs. Scott, going into Mrs. Lundy's room to put coal on the fire, found the old lady lying across the fender, dead, her clothes smouldering, and her back badly charred.

At the inquest that was held before Dr. A. W. -M'Arthur, S.M., yesterday afternoon, the evidence of the daughter stated that the old lady had been a widow for about eight months, and suffered a good deal from sciatica, and failing eyesight. She had complained of feeling the cold in the morning, but otherwise was in her usual health.

Mrs. Scott, deceased's landlady, stated that slip discovered Mrs. lund.v's dead body about half-past four in the afternoon. Her clothing was smouldering, but the fire-in the-grate had gone put. She lifted the body away from "the fender an/1 ran to the neighbours for assistance. Sho then tried to find a doctor, without result. Waimate, July 19. A young mau named Loper, aged 19 years', was out on a. hill with a party wallaby hunting yesterday when he foil going up a spur. The fall caused a barrel of his gun to go off, and the charge entered his chest. He was brought to Waimate Hospital after being carried over difficult country, and now lies in a precarious condition.
