PROPOSED CANVASS FOR FUNDS. The monthly meeting of llio Victoria Collego Council was held last evening, there being present: The chairman (Mr. Charles Wilton), Sir lloln'rt Stout, Uio Rev. \V. A. Evans, Dr. C. I'. lvuight, and Messrs. 11. D. Bell, J. Graham, M.P., 11 M'Cyllum, C. Watson, K. M'Nab, 11. I l '. Von liaast, If. 11. Ostler, T. R. Fleming, and A. U. Meek. According lo Uio periodical slntoment of finances, the credit balance, alter providing lor payments, •otaliing .£6-3 103. 3d., was ,£3i'll Us. 3u. A letter was received from llio Government, in reply to a request by tho council that a subsidy be paid, on tho amount of the scholarship in physics, in which it was slated that the matter would 1)C considered in connection with the general question of subsidies for voluntary contributions in aid of higher education. Tho Finance Committee, in reference to tho matter, recommended that a letter bn rent, expressing the hope that the matter would bo considered at an early (Into, as tho council desired lo iul'ite applications for the scholarship.—The recommendation was adopted. Tho Finance Committee .sent forward a suggestion by the Professorial Board, that u circular bo issued with a view 'of obtaining subscriptions to make up tho amount of ,£IOOO required for the building of tho new, wing, and recommended that thonzli it could not ndvise tho adoption of the suggestion, the, council might join tho board in a personal canvass.— On tho motiou of Mr. Von Haast, seconded by Mr. M'Callum, tho recommendation of tho committee was agreed to. Mr. Von liaast said that when tho council waited upon t'he Minister for Education with rel'orenco tx> the matter, Mr. Fowlds commented upon the lack of pul>lic spirit which appeared to obtain in Wellington in regard to the aiTairs of tho eollege. Mr. Von liaast went' on to say that he thought that the personal influence of the members of the board and of the council would result, in a more successful appeal than would be accomplished by a circnlpr. . After a good deal of discussion, a motiou by Mr. Dell to resuscitate the Library Committeo was carried, it being also decided on his motion that Dr. Knight and Messrs. A. R. Meek, R. M'Nab, and 11. D. Roll act as members of the committee, and that a specific sum bo appropriated in cach year Oo be expended by tho Library Committee, subject to the apjirpval of the council, t'lio Library Committeo to confer .with (ho Professorial Board with respect to all books to be ordered.
