THE JAPANESE TREATY.

AUSTRALIAN LABOUR VIEWS,

By Telegraph—Prass Association-Copyrieh* Melbourne, July 18. > The Acting Federal Prime Minister (Mr. W. M. Hushes) declared that the new treaty was the most significant factor in the Empire's defence problem. He hoped that tho new scope of tho arbitration treaties would be extended to cover other countries. Sydney, July 18. Mr. W. A. Holman, Acting State Premier, considers that the AngloJapanese Treaty effectually disposes of the yellow peril scare, which he personally regarded as without foundation. He trusted that venomous journals would cease attempting to stir up international hostility. ENGLISH PRESS COMMENT. (Rec. July 18, 10.40 p.m.) London, July 18. Tho newspapers note with satisfaction the approval of the Commonwealth and the other Dominions of the renewal of tho Japanese Alliance, and particularly tho introduction of the new clauso relating to general arbitration.

They also note Franco's gratification at a step which will strengthen tho hands of Britain's friends, and the St. Petersburg journal "Novoe Vremya's" applause of the omission of the clauso relating to countries adjacent to tho Indian frontier, and its further advocacy of a general arbitration treaty between Russia and Great Britain.
