"SUDDEN DEATH FOR KARORI."

THOSE TRAMWAY RULES. The much-discussed tramway regulations were the subject of a spccial meeting of tho Karori Borough Council last night, the Mayor (Mr. Charles Cathie) presiding Councillors W. Anderson, W. H. Ninnno, A. Frost, W. G. Bradnock, A. Hamilton, ,UI ? ,roro flso present. •the .Mayor explained that the purpose of the meeting: was to consider the new Ordor-m-Council in regard to the tramand tho report made on tho regulations by tho City Engineer." Tho proposed Order-in-Council. he. said, meant practically ruin to tho lvarori Council. Tho increased eo*t which the regulations would entail would mean nn increase of from Is. to Is. td. per car mile. This increase would be a burden on the city generally, and the council should assist'the city in its opposition to the proposals. Drastic methods might have to lie taken, but they tho Act repealed. He moved: ".that the council strongly protests the proposed regulations, and resolves Jo co-:i]ierate with the Wellington City Council and all other local bodies .interested in tramways to urge upon the Government that; such regulations will | be detrimental to the running of any service." Councillor Frost hoped the motion would be passed unanimously, and Councillor Hum considered the purpose of (he Government wn< to monopolise the tramways throughout New Zealand. If all these regulations came into effect it would mean sudden death to the lvarori trams. , The Mayor remarked that it was a ca«e of meddling without incurring any responsibilities whatever. It was certainly making it very strong. The motion was carried unanimously. A letter was received from the Town Clerk stating that a conference of representatives of local bodies would be hold in the Town Hall 011 Monday to consider tho matter. The Mayor and Councillors Vvost and Hamilton were appoint- i ed to represent the council at the con- 1 fercnoa.
