A sensational sequel to the death of Elsie Holknd ou the night of Juno 13 last at , a house in First Avenue, Kingsland, took place to-day, when three persons were arrested and taken to tho lockup on a charge of having murdered the deceased girl. The prisoners are- James EdwaTd O'Shaughnessy, his wife, Martha Jane O'Shaughnessy (formerly Mrs. Maxwell), ■and tho letter's daughter, Mrs. HartleyTho arrests were carried out by Chief Detective Marsack and six of his staff, and so quietly was the scheme of arrest carried out that even some hours after tho successful conclusion of the drama it was unknown except to a comparative fe»; in the immediate vicinity of tho O'Shaughnessys' house. At the inquest on Miss Holland, the medical evidence was to tho effect that death was due to the results of an illegal operation. Cautious and continuous inquiries by the detectives led up to today's triple arrest. A thorough search of the shop and house tenanted by the O'Shaughnessys took place after the removal of the prisoners, but the authorities decline to say whether any fresh evidence was discovered. Tho accused will be brought up before the magistrate to-morrow, when a remand will bo applied for. It ,is understood that othor arrests may follow, and that the Crown Prosecutor now has charge of the case.
A COMPLETE SURPRISE. HOW THE AEEEST WAS MADE. (By Te]egrapb..-,Special Correspondent.) Auckland, July 17. A sensational triple arrest took place early -this afternoon. Just as James Edward O'Shaughnessy and his wife, Martha Jane O'Sliaughnessy, together' with the lattor's daughter, Mrs. Jane Burns Hartley, were about to sit down to lunch in the kitchen of their house nt Kingsland, a force of detectives, under Chief Detective Marsack, arrived and arrested all three on warrants charging them with the murder of Elsie Alexander Holland, on or about June 13 last. The accused persons were evidently taken completely by surprise, and submitted to their apprehension with•' ti.o best grace possible. On the arrival of the partv at tho Kingsland terminus the chief detective and four of his men proceeded into First Avenue, where the residence of the parties lies, immediately in the rear of their shop. Two men were sent round to the back door, Mr. Marsack and two others going to tho front. It was soon made clear that the inmates were totally unprepared for the surprise that, awaited them. In response to the officer's.knock,, O'Shaughnessy opened the door, and all threo were quietly arrested. She kept this attitude up all the way to the police station, but the otners were silent.
