NOTES ON THE RACING.

In tho opening event, Wauchope, with Gray in tho saddle, was mado a very strong favourite, and another Auckland horse, Dogger Bank, was second in demand.. Wauchopo began well, and led into the straight, but then conimenced'-to fall back aud finished third. His jbekey lost a stirrup-iron during the race, but whether this seriously affected his chance or not is a matter for conjecture. At all events, Negative, who hails from Bhmheim, won quite comfortably at the finish. The winner was bred at Karaiuu, and is a full-brother to Kairoma. Dogger Bank van a good race, but the distance was just a littlo too far fur him. St. Bill was in a nice position halfway through the race, but he stopped suddenly and finished last. On a previous occasion, when heavily backed in a hurdlo race, ho behaved in a similar manner, and it is considered possible that he may have some internal complaint.

Realising that Epsom Lass was more than favourably handicapped in the Miramar Handicap, the public made her favourite, but Undecided and Gold Circle each carried a lot of money. Young, on the favourite, allowed the other two to fight out the contest'until halfway up the straight, when ho brought Epsoni Lass along, and won easily. Young was onlv engaged to ride the winner at the last minute. S. Reid, who was to have had tho mount, journeyed to Trentham by motor-car, but, meeting with two accidents on the road, did not reach the course until after tho third race. Hewas just in time to take the ride on Full Rate in the Parliamentary Handicap.

Only three horses were supported to any large extent among the thirteen starter's in tho Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. These wero Hoanga, Dnil, and . Sunray. On the strength of his recent winning performance at Napier Park, combined with tho fact that the C.J.C. handicapper had set him to carry nearly as much weight in the Grand National Steeplcchaso as he had to carry in this hack race, Hoanga was a good favourite. He justified the. confidence reposed in him by winning from end to end. His victory doEs not carry with it a penalty for the Wellington Steeplechase, ' but, in the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccartou, he will have to shoulder a fllb. penalty. The two horses that fell were going particularly well at the stages of (he race where they came to grief. was racing alongside Hoanga at the stone wall, but toppled over at that jump. His rider, J. O'Connell, received a slight kick on the head, but was right again an hour after the race. Dnil appeared to be overhauling the leader, and was in .second position a mile from home, when tne sod wall proved too much for him.

Thirteen starters went to the post for the Parliamentary Handicap. L'loCtrnkofV was a pronounced favourite, while Full Rate was (he rank outsider, the condition of the latter suggesting that; lie-had done very little work. The favourite duly won. but, rounding the home bend, it looked as if his chance was gone, for ho was disappointed in trying to get through an opening. Gray, however, quickly found another way oul, and had aniplo lime to get the measure, of Wimmera. lncy, who lost n lot of ground at the start, finished well, and reached sixth position. Provocation, though he did not. finish in a place, showed all his old brilliancy at the start. He occupied the extreme outside position at the barrier, and, when the tapes flew up. he jumped' all' ahead of everything. Hatch lock him right across on to the rails, ami he Ld for half a mile, but then dropped back, and linished in the ruck. By going across to tho rails so ijuickly Provocation must have covered unite a lot of extra ground, and in addition he was in the luavy going. Had he been kept straight down the track it. seems probable that he wmtld have, lasted much longer. As it ivas, his form greatly impressed the public, and he is now a firm favourite for the Winter Cup at. Kiccarton, having Iron liberally supported in doubles ami trebles on Saturday night.

The Native, Waipnlere, Golden Water, and Aberration were withdrawn from the Winter Hurdles, leaving, twelve slarlors. North-Mast was a slighliy better favourite than Compass., while .liilin, The If over, and Bollin were also well supported. The Royer, who took up a nice position behind

the leaders early in the race, came away from tho field five furlongs from homo, and won comfortably by several lengths. This was the winner's second appearance in a hurdle race, lie having run unplaced in a hack event on the first day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting. Though quite a little horse he is a very clever jumper, and ho has proved himself possessed of pace on numerous occasions. He is engaged in the Grand National Hurdles, and, with his penalty, will have to carry lOst. lllb., or 201b. more than he won with on Saturday. C. Price, who rode an admirable race in the Winter Hurdles, will also have the mount in the Grand National. NorthEast flattered his backers by commencing well, but his jumping was erratic, and, after laying the second hurdle flat and severely testing tho third, his pace eased off. He led until five furlongs from home, but tired after that, and w : as beaten out of a place. Compass ran a great race and finished very strongly, but did not appear to be making much impression on tho winner. Of tho others To Ru, Paritutu, and Windage made the most creditable showings. John, who raced in bandages, was disappointing.

Ainsdale, the Ivaramu candidate for the Trial Plato, was so heavily backed that the supply of tickets (No. 20) temporarily gave out at tho fotalisator. In selecting him as favourite, the public made no mistake, for tho son of Birkenhead was always in front, and won by a good margin at tho finish. Blnkeney'and St. Petersburg, who were best backed of tho others, both got bumped 'about severely during the middle stage of the race, and St. Petersburg did well to finish third.

In the Te Aro Handicap. Lady Fran was a better favourite than Mrs. Whitney's bracketed horses, Ahuapni wind Varna. H. Gray had tho mount on the latter, and, making a well-timed run in the straight, he scored comfortably after I.onqslep appeared to have the race won. To Waharoa, who was well backed on the strength of a gallop, which he did with Epsom Lass on Thursday, did not run prominently, mid the favourite Lady Fran could get no nearer than fourth.
