A POPULAR OFFICER.
DETECTIVE CASSELLS FAEEWELLED. The esteem in which Detective-Sergeant Cassells is held by the uniform branch of the local police force was manifested at a large gathering of policemen which took place at the billiard-room of the Lambton Quay Station on Saturday, on tho ere of the departure of tho officer named to Napier. The occasion of tho gathering was the desire of the uniform branch to show their appreciation of the assistance given them on all occasions by Dclcclivo Cassells, and to mark this Sergeant Lyons, tho oldest member of the force present, handed Detective-' Cassells a lmndsomo mnrbh clock,, bearing tho following inscription:— "Presented to Detective John .T. Cassells, on his transfer to Napier, by the uniform members of the Wellington police force." In making tho presentation, Sergeant Lyons referred to tho readiness with which Detective Cassells had always assisted the uniform branch of the service, ami to his many sterling qualities as a police officer and a man. On behalf of the gathering, Sergeant Lyons wished Detective and Mrs. Cassells every prosperity in their future home. Constable T. Kelly also s|x>kc on behalf of (ho junior members of the. uniform branch, and thanked Deteelivo Cnssollti for the courtesy and assistance he had always been so ready to extend. Constable Taylor, of Wellington South, spoke in similar strain, stressing the readiness which the departing detective hud invariably displayed in coming to the assistance of members of the uniform branch when necessity arose. 1-1 thanking tho force for their kind remarks and the substantial token of their esteem. Detective Cassells expressed liis sincere regret at having to leave Wellington, "but," lie added, "if 1 spoke for an hour, I could not show you how deep these expressions to-night have- touched me." The gathering concluded with the singing of "He's a Jolly Good Follow" by an assemblage- of sound-lunged) healthy policemen.
