THE PLOUGH.
THE EARLY DAYS AND NOW. \ Several interesting references to a plough and to ploughing were made at' flic dinner at Marton, which followed tho ploughing competitions held there' this week. It was statttl that 1820 was tho year in which the first plough was used in New Zealand. Mr. W. J. Birch referred to plonghiii" in the early days, when bullocks were the chief means of power. Tho work turned-out-then was not nearly so picturesque and neat as the work seen-at the ploughing match that day. Mr. J. Balsillie said that ploughing in tho North Island, as a whole, was very slip-shod compared with - that in tho South Island, as sufficient care was not taken in the. work. Tho old wooden plough in tho old days had done as good work as tho up-to-date plough in uso to-dav. Tho improved implements were capable nf much better work. Farmers • -mid not forget that they wore using virgin land, and that although the plough did a lot of good work the land would not always retain its productiveness unless fed by artificial means.
Tho Dalefield Dairy Factory Directors linvo decided to instal llvo new Victor Milk Vats, and have instructed Mr. Albert J. I'arton, of Carterton, to deliver them complete for August. Anyono interesed in milk vats, cans, or checso hoops should write for a catalogue, 'i'liu "Victor" mak".* arc out on their own for quality.and liuuh.- unto now.* ;
