WANTED-A NEW RECREATION GROUND.
[To tlio Editor.] g; r _i have forwarded a copy of the attached letter to ail the local sports bodies. It is tlio outcome of a joint meeting of Brooklyn and city residents. Will vou be good enough to give it publicity in your columns?—l am, etc., F. M. 13. FISHER. Wellington, July 12, 1911. Dear Sir,—Notwithstanding the liberality of tiie municipal corporation in the past there is still work to be done in tho matter of recreation grounds. The following amounts have been spent 011 the grounds mentioned:—«£lo,GTs upon Duppa Street, .£12,831 upon Anderson Park, and JCSGBS upon Kelburne. But there is yet a portion of the city for which nothing in this direction has been done. ,1 refer to Brooklyn and the area round about Upper Willis Street, Wordsworth Street, and Mitcholltown. Close at hand, and lying between the Biooklyn tramline and the Ohiro Road is an area of town belt which might, at a very reasonable cost', bo converted into one of tho finest, most convenient and sheltered playing grounds ill thojcity. It is within easy reach 011 the one hand of that, portion 'of tho city which is most congested, anil of .mother portion (Brooklyn) where tho cost of overcoming natural difficulties would be enormous.
Tho construction of such a playing ground would bo an immeasurable boon to those thousands of children who attend the Brooklyn, Mitchclllown, Willis Street', Ghnznco Street, and Mount Cook Schools. It would relieve the strain upon tho Basin Reserve and would supply a very natural requirement tn the 15,000 citizens who reside within tho area of which tho proposed ground would he tho ccntTcf
Wo want your assistance in this matter. We want an inlluenti.il deputation to wait, upon the City Council and uito upon that body I lie necessity for the work. Will you appoint' a representative to net with us upon our committor? Much as has been done, our recreation grounds ;>ie inadequate and tho council is unable to overcome 111" difficulty until it constructs more ground.*, H you will pass a resolution approving the project and also appoint' a delegate to represent you on ouv com mil tie, v.e shall be jrlad to have your valuable assistance.—For Hie Committee, F. M. B. FTSIIKU, Chairman.
