MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL.
PUBLIC NUISANCES DISCUSSED,
A meeting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday morning, Mr. G. Monk presiding. Councillors F. T. Moore, S.'Bryant, Eastwood, Haggerly, and Hawkins were also present. A'letter was received from Messrs. Maco and Nicholson, contractors, asking the council to enter into an agreement allowing them to run their -wagon on the roads for a term of 21 years, in consideration of their supplying the council with metal np lo 500 yarSs at a reduction of 20 per cent, iir price. It was resolved that the applicants be informed that they would be allowed to run on tho roads under the sanib conditions as before, during the term of office of the present council. On tho motion of Councillor Mooro it Mas decided to write to tho Otaki Licensing Committee in regard to a licensed houso under tho jurisdiction of the committee, expressing the surprise and astonishment of the council that no action had vet been taken to remedy certain drainago and rubbish nuisances complained of a month ago. It was stated, in refercnco to the drainage of the .lohnsonville l'olico Station, that, while tho Health Inspector had reported that a nuisance existed, and had made a recommendation for its abateinent, ho had nevertheless failed to notify the.Police Department. When tho inspector was questioned, before the Hospital aud Health Committee, he was alleged to have stated that notice had been served, but was being ignored. Councillor Mooro had given notice to move:—"That ;> combined protest bo made lo tho Actiug-Priiue Minister at the action of the Police Department in refusing to abate a. public nuisance," but a letter was received that day from tho Commissioner of Police stating that ho had not received notice of nuisance. Councillor Alo'j-o. then moved:—That a copy of the Health Officer's report be sent to the Commissioner of Police, and tlio Commissioner be informed that tho Ileal!h Department's officers had failed to supply the police with a copy when tho inspection was made, and that tile council would bo glad if steps could be taken to have the nuisance abated at once in the interests of public health." Reverting to the .alleged blo«iiig-up of H'o South ICarori Bridge, Mr. D. Mulhaiie «■ rote slating that, in his opinion, (he bridge had not been blown up. After some furlher discussion, in which it was staled that the council could hardly ' hope to fathom the mystery, (he police : having failed, the loiter was ordered lo lie on tho table.
