(By Tolccrapli.—SDecial Correspondents Palmerston N., July It. Tho annual mccling of (he Maiiawalti Kennel Club was held at the A. and 1 . offices last evening, tho president (Mr. I'. ]■:. Watson) in tho chair. The following officers were elected President, Major Dunk; vice-presidents, Messrs. \\. lieek and !•'. ii. Wilson; committee, Messrs. A. J. Shailer, T. Richards, W. F. Dunvard, and J. J. Lissington; ilclegat'es t';> New Zealand Kennel Club, Messrs. Watson and Dunvard. The secretary was instructed to inform (ho New Zealand Irish Terrier Club that this club would add limits. The schedulo for the November show is to be framed immediately. The Friendly Societies' Council held its monthly meeting last night, Bro. W. H. Duthie presiding. The committee which has in hand the arranging of a Friendly Societies' Church parado was instructed t'o complete the arrangements so as io hold tho parado at an early date. A sub-com-mittee was appointed to go iuto the matter of t'he annual Friendly Societies' picnic, and to ascertain tho dates on which 1 tho military tournament is to bo held this year. The hospital visitors reported that one member of a lodge was in tho hospital, and Bros. Duthie and Cleveland wero appointed visitors for tho ensuing month. Tho Palmerston Egg Circle has set up tho following General Committee: Messrs. J. Morris, J. Bierre, J. S. Munro, F. Ekstedt, iS. Twigg, and C. White. The circle has now thirty-iivo members. "Compulsory military service" was discussed at t'ho weekly meeting of the local Literary and Debating Society. Messrs. M'Connon and Neilsen led the debate on cither side, and after an interesting discussion, a voto affirmed that compulsory military service was necessary.

The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, Air. J. G. Wilson (chairman) presiding. Tho chairman reported on what had taken place at the recent conference of Hospital Boards in Wellington, and the excellent work that had been done. lie was accordcd a vote if thanks. Correspondence was read from Dr. Frengley, stating that the Valuer-General had declined to supply details of valuation of tho board's property free of cost, and X 2 2s. was passed to pay for tho information. First' instalments of levy wero received from various county and borough councils. Tho Public Trustee wrote stating that tho late Mr. J. H. Murray had bequeathed ,£lO to tho hospital, and a donation of J3lO was received from the oversea club (as the result of the patriotic concert) towards the proposed children's ward at the hospital. The Government Accident Insurance Department intimated that T. J. Williams would he paid .£26 Hs. 6d. for permanent injury to his finger. The chairman reported that tho site offered by the lvairanga County Council of a portion of the gravel reserve at Awapuni lor the proposed Old Men's Home was an ideal ono for tho purpose. Tho City Council would let them have ten acres at u nominal rent, and more loud ■ if desired, and the sub-committee had practically decided to close with t'he offer. It was decided to iustal an electric light plant at tho hospital at a cost of about ,£BOO. Tho chairman reported that all t'he nurses at the hospital who had gone up for examination had passed. This would mean that thoy would be entitled to more salaries, but ho thought, that it was decidedly creditable that they had all pnsscd, aiul furthermore, it' was most desirable that their services should be retained. On the recommendation of tho matron, Nurse Bennett was promoted to tho position of head nurse, and Nurses Stronach, Schmidt, and Zeigler to senior probationers. Miss J. M.-Russell's name was added to tho list of probationers awaiting ongagement. The Governor' has intimated his intention of visiting the Manawatu A. and P. Spring Show the second day, Thursday, November 2.

Tho locnl Orange Lodge held its annual "social" last night, and tho gnthering proved succcssful and enjoyable. The attendance was large, and included_ visitors from other parts of tho Dominion, and also from Australia. Constable King, who has been transferred to Wauganui, left for that town yesterday. Mr. Geo. Scifert', who is backing l'ogwell in the sculling match with Barry for the championship of England, left Palmcrston yesterday ,en route for London, for, the purpose of witnessing tho contest'. The recently-firmed Palmcrston North High School Old Girls' Association held its first' socinl evening in tho Social Hall of the school last night, when 'there was a good attendance. Miss Ironsides presided. The evening was devoted to vocal and instrumental music and games. Further news has just been received from Launccston that Mr. 11. Palmer, of l'almerston North, who is laid aside witn typhoid fever there, is making a good recovery. St. Peter's Ladies' Guild held their monthly "social" last evening, between thirty and forty couples being present, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. Mr. 11. S. Porteous was a most painstaking M.(J. A sitting of tho Native Land Court was held at Palmcrston to-day, Judge Gilfedder presiding. The carriers of Palmcrston are petitioning tho Minister for Railways for better facilities for transacting business at tho Palmcrston railways. Tl»a question of requirements to bring the station np-to-duto is a lengthy one, and, incidentally, includes tho better staffing of tho station. The petition, which is to bo presented to the Minister by Mr. D. Buick, M.P., has been signed by all tho carriers doing business in tho town.

Messrs. Nathan and Co. havo received an order from Home for two tons of dried milk for Dr. M.wson's Antarctic expedition. The shipment, which will be put in hand at oneo, will meet the boat in November at Hobart, and will bo the only milk in any shape that will bo taken by tho expedition. At a social reunion of ex-pupils of the Palmerston High School last" night, it was decided to form an Old Boys' Association, and the following officers were elected President, Sir. J. 13. Vernon; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. Foote, J. Murray, W. 11. Collingwood, and W. Kutherfurd; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. Vernon; committee, Messrs. C. Nottlefold, E. 'Waldcgravc, and G. Trcmaine.
