MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, July 13. A somewhat exciting incident occurred on the Opaki Road, near Masterton, yesterday afternoon. A traveller in a motorcar was passing over the railway crossing, when the afternoon train from the north crashed into it. The car was thrown off tho track and considerably smashed about, and it was almost miraculous that the occupant escaped with his life. A meeting of the Farmers' Defence Committee of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held last evening to discuss the question of the shearing rates for tho ensuing season. Mr. H. A. Kevins, of To Nui, presided. After some discussion, it was decided that tho meeting be adjourned until July 29, and that, in tho meantime, all owners in the district be consulted by circular. A small wash-out occurred on the rail.way line between Jlauricevillc and Mangamahoo during the recent storm, and tho trains passing north and south had to slow down yesterday. A keen frost was experienced in Masterton this morning. The weather appears to have taken a turn for the better. Mr. Puhara Te Tail, of Masterton, who was for somo years connected with tho Native Mounted Corps, has been appointed by tho Defence Department to organise the Natives of the Wnirarapa. Mr. Te Tan will address tho young Maoris, and, besides registering those who are chgiblo for the infantry, will endeavour to form a mounted corps.. Thirty-eight nominations hav> been received for the 30 seats on the committee of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The election of the committee takes placo at the annual meeting of the association on Saturday, July
