MR. D, M'LAREN'S SPEECH.
Sir,—ln your issue of yesterday Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., is reported to have said at his meeting on Tuesday night that I had gone wrong on tho land question, or, in other words, broken my election pledges. This is not only misleading, but quite incorrect. By referring to Hansard, it will bo seen that on every occasion when the question was freehold versus leasehold, I consistently voted leasehold; On one occasion, however, when Mr. Massey niofed a freehold amendment to t'lio Financial Statement, which was accepted by tho Government a3 a wnnt-of-confidenco motion, I voted for the amendment becauso I was pledged to vote against the Government on any no-coniidcncc motion. Mr. M'Laren did not vote at all. How, then, hnvo I broken mv pledges, seeing that the issue in question was not freehold versus leasehold, but one of no confidence in the Government, and I was elected to vote against tho Government on a uo-coiifi-dence motion ? Perhaps Mr. M'Lnrcn will explain.—l am, etc., E. A.. WEIGHT. July 12.
