NEW WINCHESTER HEAD.
SECOND MASTER' APPOINTED TO SUCCEED DR. BURGE. The Warden and Fellows of 'Winchester Collect luivc appointed Mr. Montague .1. Kendall to succeed Dr. Burge, no"v Bishop of Kouthwark, a.s headmaster. Mr. Kendall has been second master since ISO!), previously to which he was an assistant master, and for the past six months has been acting-headmaster. He is not. a Wykchaiurrr, and the Warden niul Fellows have, therefore, repeated the experiment which they found so successful in tho caw. 'if Or. Tiurgo, of coin? ontsido the ranks for a liead. Never before in tho modern history of the college has a bachelor, and one who is not. in Holy Orders, been appointed. Another feature is that Mr. Rendall is a Cambridge man, and as such will preside over an institution which is Oxford to the backbone, and where at one time it was dangerous to wear light blue favours on boat race day. The appointment shows the catholicity of the times so far as Wjkeham's College is concerned.
In his day Mr. Itcnrlall was a noted footballer, but hi.s main liobbics outside his work are mountain climbing and pictures. He has just published a book on the mountainous region of Sinai, and ho talks both learnedly and charmingly on pictures and painters. He is at. tho head of a syndicate in• Winchester to provide dwellings of a henlthy type for the working elates and deeply interested in social problems.
