LlstloU correspondent of the "Daily Mail wrote on May 27:—"The Republican Government is taking great precautions hero and all over tho country severely to repress any royalist apitatioii. tho newspapers say the!, the Spanish Government has ordered tho removal to Madrid of suspect Portuguese residing on tho frontiers. A disagreeable impression has been caused here by tho fact that King Manoel's secretary, tho Marquis Lavradio, is holding conferences in Galicia, in spite of promises by Spain not to allow such proceedings. "There is the greatest anxiety hero to get news from tho north. The newspapers, continue to deny the existence of any causo for fear. Many and important arrests continue to bo made all over tho country. Lisbon is empty. The streets are deserted. Hundreds "of Carbonari (members of the great Republican secret society), sleepless and vigilant, parade tho streets and the barracks at night. All arc ready, at the first, alarm, to givo their lives for tho Republic. There have been no disturbances in Lisbon."
