Taylor was three yards behind. . REASONS FOR DEFEAT. (Bee. July 10, 0.25 a.m.) Sydney, July 9. Postle attributes his defeat to the recurrence of an old trouble—stiffness in a sinew in his left leg after passing the hundred yards. Taylor had not fully recovered from his recent indisposition. Holway was born at Attebro, U.S.A., on April 19, 1393, being 26 years of age. He is one of the heaviest men that, has obtained world's championship honours as a sprinter, standing 6ft., and weighing close on 13st. His stride is about Bft. He and Donaldson have run four times; the first in South Africa, when Donald-son-won a 100 yds. triangular match against the American and A. B. Postle; then in Wales, when Holway won a match over 130 yds. They came together at.Bendigo in April, when Donaldson won comfortably, and their next meeting was at Melbourne on May IS last, when Donaldson easily defeated the American crack. . In the first event at Melbourne, over 75 yards, the champion caught his man after they hadgoni about 40 yards, and he won by n yard and a quarter in 7 3-5 sec. The 100 yds. race was practically the short event over again, except that Donaldson won moro easily, fully three yards separating the men at the finish. The time-koopor's watch showed 9 4-ssec, but in .this instance, a number of others mado it ten seconds dead. Tn the 220 yards event both ran magnificently, Donaldson's beautiful uiaehineliko action being much admired. Holway seemed to roll a good deal, but he put in such telling work that at ISO yards it looked as though he would overhaul Ms opponent. In the last fifty yards Donaldson, however, streaked away, and won, pulling up; by six yards. The time was 22 l-ssec.
