The Victoria, with an English mail (via Suez) ami an Australian mail, arrived in Auckland from Sydney at G o'clock last evening. Tho Wellington portion of the mail will arrive here this afternoon by (he ilain Trunk express. An Knglish and American mail, via Vancouver, arrived at Suva on Thursday last. From there it , is being brought on to Auckland' by the Kurow, due to-morrow. Tho Wellington bags should arrive by Wednesdays Jlain Trunk express.
His Honour Sir J. S. Williams will deliver judgment at 10 a.m. to-day in Huston v. Knight, a case under the Wuges Protection Act'. Tho Court of Appeal will sit at 10.;t0 a.m. t'o tiike the case of G. P. Donnelly v. the Commissioner of Taxes.
The ttinth annual conference of tho New Zealand Haihvay Officers' Institutw opens <il Dunedin to-day. To-morrow the annual conference of the Nw Zealand Dental Association will commence, in Wellington. Hitherto this conference has been hold at the beginning of January, but at the last conferenco it was decided that the date be altered to midwinter from midsummer for a variety of reasons. The authorities of Victoria College have kindly placed rooms at the disposal of the conference, and there all tho sittings will be held, and a large number of practical demonstrations will be given. Tho roll will be called at 9.30 to-morrow morning, and the president, Dr. Paterson, of Christchurch, will afterwards deliver an address.. The proceedings aro to extend over four days.
A child named Jack Williamson, 18 months old, residing at 198 Taranakl Street, was admitted to tho hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from severely scalded arms. The injuries are not con-

Tho Irish delegates, who are at present in Otago, are due back in Wellington .about the middle of next week. Messrs. Donovan and Kedmond are to address meetings at Opunake on July 17 anil Manaia on July 18. They return to Wellington on July 19, will bo banqueted by tho Hibernian Society on Thursday, July 20, and wili leave, for Sydney the next day. On Thursday last llr. Martin Kennedy cabled .C4OOO, as a first instalment of the proceeds, to Mr. John Kedmond, leader of the Nationalist party in tho House of Commons. Mr. Kennedy stated in the cable that he expected to raise £10,000 altogether in tho Dominion. He mentioned the enthusiastic reception accorded everywhere to the delegates. On Saturday morning Mr. Kennedy received a cable message from Mr. John Redmond: "JC4UOO received; happy congratulations and thanks.—John Kedmond."
The Auckland City. Council sat in committee for threo hours on Thursday evening discussing matters relating to tho engineering department. It is understood (says the "Herald") that the council -was unanimously of opinion that tho existing arrangement whereby tho city engineer gives half his time to the Auckland City and Suburban Drainage Board and half to tho Ciiy Council is unsatisfactory, and requires readjusting. Councillors expressed the opinion that Iho requirement's of the city of Auckland necessitated that the whole time of a city engineer should bo devoted to them. The opinion' was also expressed that as the early and successful onmpletion of the sewerage scheme for the city and suburbs was of primary importance* to' Auckland, it shouTd'bo'iuij-' gested to the Drainage Board that there should bo a separation of the present offices, and that tho full time of one engineer should 1)0 given to' the sewerage 'scheme, wliich involves an expenditure of over ,£500,001).
The adjourned inquest, into Hie circumstances surrounding the death of the late Mr. Duncan M'Murrich, which was to havo boon continued this afternoon, lias been further adjourned until Wednesday. This was necessary owing to the absence of Dr. A. M'Arlhur, S.M.. at Auckland, where he is engaged on Railway Appeal Board Business.
Sir George lieicl, High Commissioner for Australia, accompanied Mi , . Fisher and other political leaders on a visit to Scotland. At Ayr they wero entertained by a choir who sang round tho Burns Statue such well-known songs as "Ye Banks and Braes," and "Auld Lang Syne." The singing was conducted by Mr. Keir Hardie, M.P., and was joined in by all present. Aft'er the singing hod concluded Sir George Reid said to Mr. Keir Hardie: "They always told me you wore a iDomon of Discord, and now I find you've got the most beautiful voice I ever heard—out of Australia."
To-morrow evening, in the New Century Hall, Kent Terrace, Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., will address his constituents, setting forth 'the Labour party's platform. It is Mr. M'Laren's intention to deal specially with the questions nf productive lanil settlement, tho Labour laws of New Zealand, and tho Wages Board system of Victoria.
