' Later on a meeting was held in St. Matthew's Hall. At both, Mrs. Barton, an. px-councillor of Glasgow, was the principal speaker. The Eev. F. W. lsitt also gave a short address. The poultry show to be held here this month promises to be. a most successful one. The entries (1093) constitute a record for. shows held in the North Island during this year. . The Borough Council is asking the Railway Department to widen the crossing at Hcretaunga Street. The traffic frequently becomes ver"y congested nt this point. . . Speaking at the last Borough Council meeting on the question of exterminating rats, Councillor Hart said one resident had recently killed nearly 100 rats in a three-nights' crusade. The winter so far has been favourable to farmers. There have been a number of frosts, but these are very necessary in a district where so much.fruit is grown. Feed is becoming scarce, and as last summer's drought left little surplus, the pinch is now being felt, but. on the other hand, agriculturists have had a capital opportunity to make ready for a bountiful harvest next year.
