• POPULATION OF ENGLAND AND WALES. THE CENSUS TOTALS. , The Census figures or England ami Wales, giving the population as counted on the night of Sunday, April '_• (ait, wore issued on Mav 25. The previous Census was iu 1901. The following are the features shown by the figures:— The population of England and Wales is .'16,075,269,. an increase of 3,517,420, or 10.01 per cent. The rate of increase of population has fallen off from 12.17 per cent, between 1891 and 1901 to 10.91 in the last ton years. The causes are the great fall in the birthrate and the increase in emigration. The seventy-live towns show an increase of 8.89 per cent., and the sixty-two counties of 11.80 per cent. This apparently greater increase in the growth of the county population is really duo to the rapid, growth of suburbs of the towns and to the growth of manufacturing and mining towns, which are not reckoned as county boroughs. That is proved by the following examples of huge increases in counties really due to >the causes mentioned:— Counties. Inc. p.c. Cause of growth. Middlesex -12.17 Outer London, Glamorgan 39.73 Mining. Monmouth .... .15.21 Mining. Surrey M.Ofi Outer London. Essex 30.05 .Outer London. Nottingham ... 25.27 Mining & industry. Northumberland 21.92 Mining & industry. Durham ■ 21.00 Mining & industry. The'chief cause of the growth of suburbs has been, of course, the revolution in tramway, motor omnibus, electric, and "tube" railway facilities in tho last decade. A contributory cause is the garden suburb movement. Inner London has decreased, but tho outer ring has increased 33.19 per cent. The population of Greater London is 7,252,963, a net increase of 10.20 per cent. That of the City of London is 19,657, a decrease of 26.99 per cent. Only persons sleeping in the "square mile" are, of course, counted. The- exodus from the central and older parts of London is shown by tho decreases in Holborn (16 per cent.), Finsbury (13), Chelsea (10), Kensington (2.39), Islington (2.26), and Battersea (0.G6). In all twenty of the London boroughs show a decrease. . Only nine show growth. But of these Wandsworth and Lewisham have the rc- , markable increases of 31.27 and 26.10 per .- Only four-provincial towns show a decrease: _ Dec. p.e. Dec. p.c. Burton 4.19 Halifax 3.23 Canterbury 1.09 Hastings 6.69 The towns showing the greatest percentage of increase are: Inc. p.c. The largest towns are:— Glasgow ...783,401 Hull 278,021 : Liverpool .. 716,566 West Ham 269,102 •Manchester 714,427 Newcastle .. 206,671 s 'Birmingham 525,960 Nottingham 259,942 \ Sheffield .... 451,653 Stoke-on-Trent \ .Leeds 445,568 234,553 i.
