Palmerton, July 7. "That Hie Veto Rill, as presented to the House of Lords, was detrimental to the interests of Great Britain" was the .subject discussed by tho I'almcr.ston Literary and Debating Society at its weekly meeting last .night. Tho loaders for and against were Messrs. IT. N. Cooke and It. 11. Billons respectively, and after an interesting discussion a vote was taken of tho members present,, this resulting in tho Hill being affirmed. The subject for debate at the next meeting will be, "That compulsory military service is necessary." The Loyal Manawatu Lodgo of Oddfellows M.U., met last night, N.G. Bro. W. E. Matheson presiding. The following appointments were made for the ensuing term:-L.S. to N.G., Bro. R. H. Whallcy; R.S. and L.S. to V.G., Bros, W. Anderson and 0. G. Olesen; 0.G., Bro. A. J. Carson. Bro. W. Dudley was nominated as a trustee of tho Friendly Societies' dispensary.., One candidate was proposed, for membership. The quarterly balance-sheet showed that the sick and funeral fund hail reached iUOBB. Duri/s; the evening. Bro. W. Dudley was presented with a framed member's emblem."
Tho bachelors of Fitzherbort East held their annual ball.-on"Wednesday night, when there was a crowded attendance, including very largo numbers of visitors from Kairanga and Palincrstou. In fact, the. hall,-which was prettily decorated, was rathor uncomfortably crowded .during the <?arly part of the evening. Messrs. Scholes and Durrant. wero M.C.'s, and kept things going merrily till the early hours -of .the next morning, tho' dance being very enjoyable. ' . The' College Street School Committee met last night, Mr. T. It. Hodder presiding. Tho headmaster reported tho roll number to bo 523, being an increase of -14 on the previous quarter. The overage attendance was. 135. Tho headmaster and one of tho assistants had been absent some timo through sickness. The Education Board wrote stating that the blinds and extra desks needed at the. school had, been forwarded. The report of the School Committees' Association was received. A motion re censorship of moving pictures was held over till next meeting. A man named Alexander John Carlton was arrested by Detective Sweeney to-day on a charge of stealing a. pair of boots, the property" of Max Just. Accused will be brought beforo the Court to-morrow. • Mr. S. Standen, of Feilding, has accented the position as judgeo of Ayrshire • cattle ■at tho .big Mel-: bourne-show, in September next. • Mr. Standen- judged tho Ayrshir.es at the Sydney. Royal .Show. two years ago. . At the last ..show the Ayrshires were judged by Mr; Dunlop, the Scottish cr,' -and--he confirmed the New Zealand, judge's--awards by placing tho same bull for tho championship. The cow, which Mr. Standen placed.as champion at the 1909 show, was not present at tho last Sydney Show,- but it was rather a coincidence that Mr. Dunlop gave the championship to the cow which. Mr. Standen had placed as reserve champion at the previous exhibition.
