Mr. AV. Arid, of Mnkino, the wellknown veteran sheepbrteder, who has undergone an operation lor appendicitis, is progressing vi-ry well at Palmerston. A hlnrt is made this week at the Technical School with (he class for firstaid and ambulance. Mr. Southey Fowler, who first settled in l-Vilding in ISS'J, and who lias been a resident in the Otaki district during the past eight years, has been appointed private secretary to Mr. Krncst Short, ile takes up his new duties on August 1, and will reside at Parorangi. Several instances of petty thefts have been reported of late. Mr. Charles .Masters, of Lees Line, recently had lus house broken into, and 30s. in cn*h stolen. Later the house was broken into, but nothing was sloltn except 15s. belonging to one of tho men. . A conference of members of the Marton JJigh School Committee, Marlon Borough Council, Marton Chamber of Commerce, Mr. 13. Newman, M.P., ami Messrs. l'red Pirani and F. Purivell (members of the Wa'i7;wmii Education Hoard), was held at Marton this week. Tho conference wao in riinnectioii with the erection of a new school building o.n a si to purchased for the purpose. The. new building will bo in brick, and will cost about i-1000. It is understood that tho Government will provide .£IOOO, and the sale of the old building r£soo, leaving .£2500 to bo pjovided by tho board. A considerable amount of discussion took place, during which Mr, Pirani suggested that the local residents should raise <£250, which, with the .£1 for <£1 subsidy, would enable .£SOO to bo spent ou the grounds ill the shape of drainage, metalling, tree planting, and otherwise rendering them attractive. The suggestion, was taken up with enthusiasm, and .£75 was subscribed in the room, Messrs. K. E. lieckot and Miles offering «£25 aud JJ2O respectively.

A meeting of delegates of tho Oroua Hockey Association took place this week It was explained that, as the Jlanawatu Hockey Association had agreed to the formation of a sub-association in this district, it should bo knowu as the Feilding District Hockey Sub-Asseciation. Officers: were elected as follow President, Jlr. E. Short; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Ferguson, Lance Guthrie, Dr. Jlacallum Jfontgomery, and J. Graham; lion, secretary, and treasurer, Jlr. B. Breniiand. Jlr. W. E. Carthew was appointed sole selector for representative matches, with Jlr. Elliott (Halcombe), Mr. 11. Harris (Bcaconsfield), and Jlr. Kobson to act as an advisory committee.
