MR. CARROLL IN REPLY.

A DENIAL AND A PROTEST. - (To tho Editor.) Sir, —Permit me to offer some comments on the misleading report presented' to the City Council'-and still more misleading remarks of certain councillors. First, my bukohouso is duly registered as a factory, and I have always kept it up to the standard of excellence req.uired by the Act. I have never once received any complaint regarding it from the Labour Department. Secondly, a bakehouse cannot bo kept like a drawing room, particularly under such weather conditions as we have had for the past fortnight in Wellington. But I emphatically deny that there'- is (or was) anything dirty, or otherwise objectionable about tho bakohouse. I must enter a protest against the manner in which'l have been treated by the council, " first,- because .the'-re-port was discussed and " the damaging statements published without, my knowledge, and secondly, because councillors, before discussing the- report, should havo r-atislied themselves by personal., investigation of tho truth or otherwise thereof. Councillors apparently were satisfied to make the, most damaging, statements 011 ex parte evidence, and I must, ask the public to accept my assurance that tho evidence is incorrect, and nun I. know my business too well to disregard tho importanco of cleanliness in connection therewith. As for the possible shortcomings in the bakehouse, I can only say that very few establishments -in the prevailing weather could.pass tho ordeal of a surprise visit with complete satisfaction. I have no legal redress under the circumstances against tho people who havo mado . such damaging statements against mo in my business capacity; but I ask tho public to accept my assurance that these statements are at least grossly exaggerated. TlicfactthatJ. have/always satisfied the high standard required by the Labour Department is: surely strong evidence in my favour.—l am, ctc., J. CARROLL. July 6th.
