THE WAKEFIELD MEMORIAL.
(By TolosraDh.—Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, July 4. At a meeting of tho Executive Committee of tho iiai'ly Colonists' section of tho Museum, the proposed memorial to Edward Gibbon Wakefield was referred to. Dr. Hight said that he had waited on tho Mayor of Wellington, who lintl promised his hearty support and active cooperation. Ho was willing to initiate and direct the movoment from Wellington. It was also hoped that the Wellington City Council would actively assist, not only because of the services rendered by Edward Gibbon Wakefield to that part of New Zealand, but also because tho memorial would naturally be placed in the capital city, to which it would bo an additional adornment. It was intended to reopen the question early in tho next session of Parliament, and probably there ramld bt a mass meeting of citizens at Wellington, at which the Governor and tho Prime Minister would be asked to speak. It was left in the hands of Dr. Hight and Mr. Speight (hon. secretary) to arrange as what further steps should be taken
