Accused was remanded till Monday, bail being allowed—accused in £25 anil one surety of v£2s. Charles Allen was fined 105.., or 48 haul's' imprisonment for riding, in a,train, without a. ticket. if
, At the adjourned inquest conoerniug tho death of the young man Frederick Schlierikc, who committed suicide a week ago, .the coroner,.Mr. A. ' 1). Thomson, S.M., returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. Tho evidence showed that deceased had been in l a despondent state of mind for some time. '
Captain Gardner presided over a meeting of tho committee of tho Overseas Club and Navy League laet evening, when a. statement of tho receipts and expenditure in connection with tho patriotic concert, held on Coronation day, was submitted. This showed that there was a surplus of .£l3 and,. after discussion, it was decided to voto jCIO of tho amount to the children's ward which it is m<> posed to erect at the hospital. With tho Government subsidy of 245., this' will mean a substantial help to tho fund. A vote,of thanks was passed to Mr. C. Wood, hon. secretary, for tho able manner in which ho had carried out;his duties. Thanks were also accorded to Messrs. C. H. Warden and C. W. Nayloi for organising the children and tho mtisio respectively. It was decided to make tho patriotic concert an annual function, to tako place on lilmpiro day each year. It was suggested to organise a children's branch of tho League, tho stcretnty intimating that ho had already communicated with London on tho matter.
The l'almerstou Liedcrtafol holds its first concert of the season on Tuesday evening. A splendid programme has been prepared under tho conductorship of Mr. H. E. Gunter. Miss May Newman, of Wellington, will be the sojo vocalist of tho evening, and Miss Nellie Simpson, a flautist of repute, will also appear.
Tho local Court of Foresters held its usual meeting last evening, Bro. Kcsancwslci presiding. Tho officers for the ensuing term were installed. Bro. Wilton was nominated as a trustee, vice Bro, Anderson resigned, and Bro. A. Levy was appointed a trustee in connection with the Friendly Societies' Dispensary. It was decided to hold a. "social" in connection with tho court at an early date.
The appeal in tho case, W. H. Smith v. E. D. Hoben, recently decided by Iho Chief .Tustioe, and in which judgment wont for defendant, has been set down for' hearing iu Wellington on Friday next.
Tho usual meeting of the committee of tho Nursing Guild was hold last evening, the Mayor presiding, and there wore also present:—Mosdamcs L. A. Abraham, Hewitt, Morgan, H. Mowlcn, Sl'Grcgor, F. M'Donald, Miss Outrini. Sister Lonergan, and Mr. J. A. M'Lcnv*y;{treasurer). Sister Loncrgan reported having paid 55 visits during the month to patients suffering from gastric catarrh, measles, and asthma. Two patients were discharged as cured. After business, Sister Loiwrgan gavo nu instructive address to the active members of the nursing division on the uses of various dressings, illustrating her remarks with practical demonstrations; On. TheiCainpbcll Street School Committee met last night, the Rev. T. T.. Thomas being in tho chair. Tho headmaster reported thnt the roll number was 728, with an average at tendance of GG4. Tho question of tree-planting in Iho school grounds was liekl over. Tho Wnnßanui Education Board wrote staling that tho committee, had no right to dose- the school for a week during the-' Winter Show. Tho secretary remarked that the letter did not roach him till the Friday of the week in which Iho show had been held, and it was then too late to do anything.
